Fantastic Plastic 1/144 C-21 Dragon Assault Ship (Avatar)

Doesn't matter if it is factual or fictional, if it's out of this world, it goes here!

A large box, full of lots of pieces, but some significant clean-up required.
In the olden days, such a kit would be extremely heavy, as all pieces would've been solid resin. Fortunately, technology and technique has prevailed and the fuselage/hull pieces are hollow.
Unfortunately, this increases the chances of that bane of resin modellers everywhere occurring...warpage.

The instructions told me to assembly the cockpit pieces and then to sandwich these between the two, forward hull pieces. Due to warpage of the two hull pieces, this was not ever going to happen. Time for a re-think...

The fit of the main hull pieces, upper and lower, was a good one, (the resin was thicker and, therefore, not warped), so I joined these together. I then found the the lower piece of the forward hull was significantly less warped than its companion, so I chose to fix this to the rest of the hull;

NOTE that I used plasticard to reinforce the joint, as well as lashings of superglue gel, suitably set with accelerator. I wanted a very solid foundation, for what was to come.
There was still a gap showing, but again, superglue gel, with Zipkicker, sorted this out for me.

Now for that forward, upper hull;

This is how it should fit;

Superglue and Zipkicker applied;

This join was then sanded smooth and there was no gap.

This just left the other side to secure;

Usually, resin-modellers will suggest hot water, or a hot hairdryer, to heat and soften the resin, to fix warpage. I was reluctant to do this, as I was concerned I could cause the misshapen resin to become even more misshapen!
My plan was to apply superglue and Zipkicker, as before and, if the resin refused to bend back into its original shape, then I could encourage it was the hairdryer treatment.

As it was, all went to plan, sans hairdryer and I was then able to insert the cockpit sub-assembly. There were still gaps, especially around the cockpits, so yet more superglue gel was applied, smoothed over with a wet finger and accelerated with Zipkicker.

Fit of the rear engine pods was also...er....variable;

That said, I was into my stride and no gap was too problematic.

It would be quite unfair and wrong of me to imply that this is a not nice kit. Far from it. Most of the pieces are quite gorgeous and fit is no better, no worse, than any other short-run, garage product. In many instances, the moulding is exemplary and, provided appropriate care and time is taken in assembly, this is simply a kit that requires modelling, as opposed to assembling.

The 4 engine rotor-pod-type-thingies are very finely detailed and, as such, required some significant removal of resin flash;

Plastic rod is supplied, to further add detail;

So after the pods were assembled and stuck on, it was simply a case of painting..

Actually, there was nothing simple about the painting.
It's supposed to be a dark green, all over, with just a few metallic elements..
A monotone H116 all over didn't cut it, so I added a wash and did a little dry-brushing. This effectively shrank the beast, so I started again.

...And again.

...And again.

All in all, I think I painted the ruddy thing 4 or 5 times over, before I got a look I could live with.

In the meantime, I gathered my scraps of thicker plasticard, plundered the "Avatar" logo from the web, painted a Pandora, played with my laminator and some clear, acrylic rod.
