VALE: Russ Chmela

any old chit-chat?

VALE: Russ Chmela

Postby pbhawkin » Sat May 03, 2014 14:52

Hi all,
I regret to pass on this email I received:

"Just wanted to let you know, Russ Chmela passed away May 1st."

Russ was a superb modeller and especially good at scratch building.
We shared a number of emails and swapped planes. He has a number of threads and posts about some of the planes he made and it is well worth looking for them to see what a great modeller he was.

Best wishes and condolences to his family.
Regards
Peter

I am in total shock as I read this. Just over a fortnight ago, I was looking for some flying wing info and came across several entries in a Fantasy forum that were clearly from Russ. Not only did they feature photos of a couple of his wonderful scratchbuilt creations, they also included some of his artwork, including a few of his quaint dragon cartoons! Russ was one of the earliest members of the forum and, up until he pulled out due to time and monetary issues, was the most active and prolific contributor. Several of us recall Russ doing it tough during the GFC, with him selling many of his creations through this forum in part to get by financially as he contemplated relocating from his home in Arizona. I was one who bought a number of his brilliant scratchbuilds, photos of which appeared in Russ's entries on flying wings elsewhere in the forum. They will now remain a treasured memory of a talented modeller and artist, and a wonderful person who was always there to help others.

My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Russ has been one of the first friendly voices welcoming me on this blog.
And the one who, just by his avatar, had me (an Italian!) discover Porco Rosso and all Miyazaki movies.
I'm really touched by his demise.

Many thanks for the link, Mark. He will surely be missed. It has made me question my own mortality; Russ and I were both born in the same year.
