I just saw the F-35 in real life tonight. The first two dutch aircraft flew in from Edwards via Pax river to (former) viper town Leeuwarden in the North of the Netherlands.

There was a huge crowd, i believe bigger then expected. First off the orange jumper came in. A F-16B with is used for testing stuff and things. It does have some nice stickers. First time i saw it fly. After that the two F-35's did a fly by with the Government Gulfstream. Then the Gulfstream came in first. Ten minutes after that the 001 came in escorted by an F-16 and a few minutes later 002 landed at Leeuwarden AFB.

It had a really great sound. I'm looking forward to hear a afterburner start.

The aircraft wil stay for three weeks. They will be on static display at the airforce show, but most off all they are here to evaluate the noise in the surroundings of Leeuwarden AFB and Volkel AFB in the south.

If you live nearby Leeuwarden or Volkel you can sign up for a survey. You'll receive an email when and what time exactly the F-35's will commence testing. Although I live two hours from both fields it was no problem for me to subscribe for the survey :D

This gives me two advantages: first I know exactly to skip a few hours from work to go see an afterburner start. And second: I'll tell the interviewers the noise levels are far less than the F-16  :D

Here is a clip of tonight. (not filmed by me. I like to enjoy things with my own eyes and somebody else can do all the filming ;) )

This is a link to the live-stream of the arrival of the F-35's at Leeuwarden AFB in the Netherlands. Already viewed 400.000 times. I particularly like the end were the pilots are greeted by the minister of defense Jeanine Hennis Plasschaert.

I am curious about the arrival in other nations.

I didn't got go to Leeuwarden last week but luckily there is you tube.

I do want to make a F-35 now. I believe the pit road is the correct model? I didd't find any F-35A on Ebay. Is it even in stores now?

So far as I am aware, the Dutch Airforce F-35 is the F-35A version. Various models available (or used to be). Ignoring the prototype kits, the main source is PitRoad.

Doyusha did release a set a few years back of F-35A models that included 4 different USAF versions and 4 speculative JASDF models. They are not to bad. Pre-finished, of course. No weapons bays and you need to paint the undercarriange bays and undercarriange (which is very simplified). Overall better than some previous Doyusha releases. Last time I looked there were some of the JASDF models available on EBay and if you want one for conversion to a Dutch scheme, then getting it as a JASDF version wont matter to much. HLJ list the full set as being available but presently out of stock. I suspect that it will prove to be permanently out of stock....

Had a quick look at Ebay and they do still have the Doyusha listed, both USAF and JASDF models. USAF models are pretty steep. Over £15.00 for the model plus £11.00 postage from the US. There is a hong kong seller with some JASDF models at just over £8.00 plus £3.00 postage.

PitRoad have done kits of the F-35A, F-35B and F-35C. Some have been released as completed models, some as pre-painted but unassembled (a bit like the TomyTec series). Rest are normal kits. According to HLJ they are all discontinued with the exception of the US Navy F-35C version, which is out of stock at present. Couldn't see any PitRoad F-35As on Ebay. No F-35Bs either.

There are a few F-35C kits there with prices ranging from not too bad to outright insane. One seller is asking £45.00 plus £2.95 postage, whereas the cheapest is £12.33 but with £16.41 postage. So, cheaper kit but shafting you on postage costs. The best deal seems to be £14.56 plus £5.83 postage. Not sure any of those prices is worth it from what I have seen of the F-35C kit. Its nose looks way off. Too short and stubby compared to photos I have seen. Whether it can be resolved through surgery I don't know.

Thank you for the info Tony.

I thought the pit road model was a recent model

Guess I have to keep track of eBay for two A versions. Two indeed, I have decals for both aircraft :D
