Peter,

I added the reCAPTCHA mechinism to the forum registration process, this did not seem enough to stop either simple spamBOTS, or even I now think possibly some of the more sophisticated bots that added other features such a avatars etc. Interestingly reCAPTCHA is now a google service!?

I suspect that reCPATCH is more secure than the phpBB code, and therefore the vunerability is underlaying somewhere within phpBB. The phpBB forums backed up the experiences here that just before Christmans the spammers seemed to have breached some of the safeguards in phpBB and most phpBB3 forums had the same onslaught of spamming that I was getting behind the scenes.

Curiously, I have now added additional simple questions (but unique to KG144) that the user has to enter to register. It is this act that appears to thwart the scripted spamBOTS.

If you sign-out and click on the forum, then 'register' you can see the captcha and questions at work...

'fingers crossed' with the new countermeasures the spamming has stopped.....

I just hope anyone caught in the crossfire will see reapply if they have had issues?

Registration appears to have be resolved.

If you have been waiting for the approval of your registration, please reapply.
Apologies.

I have also made changes to the mailing facilities so that
a) new joiners now get the proper notification
b) existing board members can now email from within the board without launching thier email client.
c) Note: do check your spam bin on occasion as some mail may end up as spam unless your register it with your spam filter.

Regards

Hi Luis

Ah, at the moments it broken

Following the forum move we appear to have lost the ability to add new members (even manually), i'm hoping that when i upgrade the software it will fix it.

Realistically its will be the Christmas period when i can get a few days without out work etc to devote to fixing.....

I have fixed the email problem, allowing for users to self enrol and activate upon receipt of authentication checks emails without further moderator input.

I will contact recent registrants to let them know.

Thanks for fixing the registration problem. I first asked Nils about how to register in this forum a year and a half ago, so no one is happier to see this update than I am.
