It's fast and noisy and coming soon

To celebrate the Centenary of the Royal Air Force, welcome to our first year-long Group Build. With the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service on 1 April 1918, the RAF is the oldest air force on the planet, so there is plenty of scope in the Build. Anything RAF-related goes … aircraft, vehicles, boats, personnel, you name it.
Runs from 1 January to 31 December 2018.

Yes, this 3D printed Skyraider has three parts for the canopy; left and right frames with clear canopy to be inserted between. I have given the fuselage a light spray of Mr Hobby "Mr Primer Surfacer 1000" to see if that keys into the plastic for better adhesion. I will leave it a day or so, to completely dry, before doing any tests with Tamiya tape etc.

Nice one Mike.
Meanwhile one of my Phantoms needs a base. So here is my solution. Its a piece of white 20thou plastic card cut to a 6 inch square. 'Piano keys' are cut of Tamiya tape as are the centre lines. The surface was sprayed with mists of three different shades of grey (Oh Er Missus!) and the tape removed and skid marks added.

My third Phantom is a hybrid. Its the old LS F4E with a resin cast nose from an FToys J and my home made cast of the lower fuselage of the C2D printed F4M grafted under neath, The air intakes were widend to look more like the UK ones. The aircraft I am modelling was said to be 'one of the dirtiest in service.

At the height of the Falkland Crisis in Germany a Jaguar GR1 was returning to base after a routine exercise. The pilot spotted an RAF Phantom making a pass at his aircraft, as he was low on fuel he decided not to engage in a dogfight. Moments later there was an explosion, the Jaguar became uncontrollable and the pilot ejected and landed safely. What happened was that RAF Wildenrath was undergoing an exercise and Phantom XV422 was scrambled with live weapons. Due to a series of errors and cicumstances when the Phantom saw the Jaguar a live Sidewinder was fired!!

I don't normally weather my models so it was fun trying to get the effect shown in so many pictures of the RAF f4s

Looking good.
Liking the weathering, Phantoms never seen to stay clean for long!

Agreed. The scheme has almost a ghostly quality to it ... most appropriate for a Phantom. ;)

Thanks for the comments guys.
As a result of the 1982 Falklands conflict and the need to base F4's on the islands the RAF obtained some F4j's from the US. These were issued to 74 sqn, The Tigers. At a NATO tiger Meet one of the Phantoms got a few extra markings. So here is my F4s, backdated to a J just touching down with a touch of smoke as the tyres hit the runway.

Beautiful work! I love the base and how you’ve set it up. Gives it such a sense of speed. A very nicely finished model too - lovely all round.
