I thought I would show a bit of what Ive been doing with this control tower. I'm building a diorama of Bucholz Army Airfield on Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands.
Image
I am only using the tower itself, as well as the handrails and some other small parts from the kit, the rest is scratch built of styrene.
Here is the location as it looked around 1970, when I lived there.
Image
there is much to be done still of course.
I am building a number of planes that I remember seeing there, Air Micronesia 727 and DC-7, Northwest 707,
USAF C-124 and C-123, US Army Caribou and C-54, US Navy P-3 Orion and C-130.
None of them are finished but some are as far along as this diorama.

Great looking project that should look cgreat finished? How did you determine the dimensions, was it by eye or did you have some plans?

Cheers

I used Google Earth . It has a wonderful dimension tool

(This image from 2006 shows additions I am not including)
Also, my model of the terminal building slices off the street side facade, in the interest of more space on the tarmac for planes.

Thats a neat tool, google maps now has it too. I think you have to go into the "lab" options and enable it first though.

I have it lined up to use on a new project for the old 30s control tower from Brooklands. It great for the top down views, luckily i was able to nip down to brooklands and get some frontal shots and will have to use inspiration for the other elevations as these were not accessible as it building is now in the centre of a commercial/retail park :(

It would help if i finish of the other projects.......

I plan to make a second module with more buildings to the left.
A street side addition is a distant possibility. right now it is just blank on that side.

I must build a Continental Airlines 727 like that one, I flew on them several times.

Very Cool! Would you like to build a 1/144 version of the original part of the Sikorsky Memorial Airport? :D

Were going to be restoring the more blighted of the two hangars (the one with half a roof) for the eventual display of the FG-1D Corsair were also restoring.
