Bell 206 / OH-58 Kiowa + Sikorsky S-51 by Miniwing

Postby JBr-Decals » Tue Jun 12, 2018 7:03

Miniwing announced Bell 206 and Sikorsky S-51 kits for release some time during the winter 18/19. Both models are now in preparatory phase, not much details is known apart from them being injected kits. Given the amount of windows it is currently unclear if they will be molded in two sprues, one grey and one clear, or if everything will be in one sprue molded from clear plastic (just as O-1).

I will report more once I get to designing the decals for the kits.

If the request was going to come from anywhere, it was going to be either you or Mark! ;)

At the moment, I'm revisiting all those profiles posted in previous years and adding starboard views to simplify the job of painting accurately on both sides of the model. 140 down, 210 to go ... as Angus observed, "Smeg, you maniac!" As I said elsewhere, you'd be amazed how many port-side views there are compared to starboard ones when you go a-looking in books and on the Net. I have it around 90% port, 10% starboard. Still, if I get the chance, I might have a stab at the Kiowa next month.

As goes the actual decals themselves (as opposed to my artwork), I did see Geoff of Custom Decals at the Model Expo on Monday but didn't get to talk to him. Could be wrong but, looking at his display, it appears that he is getting more into developing his own decal sets than doing sheets for third parties like Peter H and myself.

IF! you were to go ahead and do Kiowa decals (for the world!), I would think a mixture of that interesting RAN one and perhaps a 'bog standard green' option.....
I wasn't actually thinking for me as such but for the various other modellers around the world and the dearth of 'true blu, mate' decals. :D

Nice! Both are very welcome for my Dutch collection.

I would love decals for the glossy blue 'Jezebel' with the white insignia. Of course, because this is hard to make yourself. Jezebel also flew with a yellow jacket, but i can make those black decals myself.

Some PE for a hoist, steps and rotor head would be awesome! This could go to a whole new level of 144 models 8-)

Nice example, Lex. Going through the ADF Serials' site, it appears that, with the exception of two Dragonflies that were loaned by the US Navy to the crew of the HMAS Sydney where both retained their USN camo and markings throughout, the standard finish on Aussie S-51s was natural metal with just standard RAAF roundels and serials. The one exception was this RAAF Rescue chopper at Point Cook. Needless to say, a lot more camouflage action with the Kiowa given its extensive service in Vietnam. There's a basic SVG file on Wikipedia, so at least I won't be starting from scratch tracing a bitmap.

Of course, Wege, you could always sweet-talk Jiri into including an example or two when he does his decal artwork. After all, you will be assured that decals will appear. I do artwork then throw up my hands when I can't get anyone to print the damned things. Of course, if I win Lotto, I could always buy a Roland sublimation printer ...

And Lex, we have a couple of PE etch wizards on the forum that might just come to the same conclusion re: add-ons for the S-51.

Smeg... if "I" win lotto.. you can still have the Roland sublimation printer (or whatever it is that is used for making decals)

I had to go and read up on that.. blimin heck!

When I do decals for Miniwing, I usually have to limit my "creativity" when it comes to picking the schemes. While I can in some way influence the choice of decal options, in the end, the final decision is up to Radek.

Dont forget , Australian Kiowas had longer Skid assemblies - for landing in the Australian bush apparently, not sure if Radek will include that so if not Ill do a 3d Print version.
Probably are other detail changes from OH-58A to Oz Kiowa
Note the Kiowas used by the Australian Army in Vietnam were lenders from the US Army so did have the shorter skids
