Desert Storm - Tornado comes of age

To celebrate the Centenary of the Royal Air Force, welcome to our first year-long Group Build. With the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service on 1 April 1918, the RAF is the oldest air force on the planet, so there is plenty of scope in the Build. Anything RAF-related goes … aircraft, vehicles, boats, personnel, you name it.
Runs from 1 January to 31 December 2018 … no extensions!

Desert Storm - Tornado comes of age

Postby BigReg » Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:32

The early successes and losses of Tornados in attacking airfields in Iraq is well documented. I think the pink colours suit the airframe well so its my choice for part of this GB. The model will be the nice Revell Tornado with a lot of aftermarket stuff. The first job will be cutting out the undercarriage bays in the rear fuselage.
More soon....

Please list what aftermarket manufacturers are for each "part". I recognize the Heroes pilots and seats (and I think wings), and see the Master brass, maybe the rest is Retro? Not sure.

Matt,
The crew, yellow resin seats and wings are Heroes models
The cockpit, grey resin seats, wheel wells, udercarriage legs were Goffy models, now ResIm (Hannants stock them)
The JP223 and other bumps such as recon blister, tiald and laser ranger were from Freightdog
I will using the RetroKit laser ranger
The probe as surmised is Master pitot tube
Wheels are Armory.
I have a vac canopy but will use a Dragon one as it has the MDC in it.
Decals will be KitsWorld but will be very restrained as this will be a first few operations machine.

I was rooting around some pictures for my 17 squadron Tornado and can across a picture of a Tornado with open cockpit, dropped flaps and open air brakes. So I thought I could do it as part of this build.

I could either cut out the airbrake doors of the Revell kit or make a Frankenstein Tornado with an upper rear deck transplant using the Dragon model.

I then completed cutting out the U/c bays ready for the resin replacements.

Note: Filler will be used in the completion of this exercise!!

The new undercarriage bays have been painted off white and are a pretty fit - loads of detail here.

The fit of the rear deck still needs a bit of work.....

Its a bit skew wiff so sanding will be the name of the game.
