Major manufacturers have always relied upon injection-moulding to produce model kits. The downside is that the moulds are expensive to produce and so these manufacturers have tended to be conservative in developing their ranges. Starting in 1969, smaller companies like RAREplanes, Contrail and Airmodel employed vacuforming to produce kits with much less capital outlay. The result? Models of types never imagined from any of the major manufacturers. Since those days, we’ve seen the growth of other technologies and materials, including resin, white metal, paper/card and, most recently, 3D-printing. This GB celebrates all these “non-injected” options and includes scratchbuilding.
Runs from 14 January to 31 December 2021.
Convair XP6Y-1 (which should really be called Pelican)
Anigrand kit, some injected plastic parts from the spares drawer here and there, but otherwise out of the box.
No injection - well this scene had cardboard, whitemetal and fabric. Not sure about the scale, the buildings are 1/148, the figures are a mix of 15mm wargame, 1/160 and 1/72... so I guess it might average out to 1/144!
I do love the Arrowhead whitemetal vehicle range, great...
Either of the topics that were voted upon for this Group Build were fine by me, although it is fair to say I have a lot more kit options now the topic is known. Apart from the AeroClub Dragon Rapide I bought from McYellowbelly last year, there's...

Nothing wrong with the S.5 - but a Heyford (or Harrow) would be a dream. If You start doing one, there is always a good chance somebody will produce a kit
So here we go, three topics in one model. Its the 144th.co.uk Lightning T4 to be finished in 92 squadron markings and here are the obligatory out of the box bits pix.....
I'm still kicking around some more scratch build GSE. Also, in my last batch of pictures I noticed that the intake ring is thicker on one side than the other. At an earlier stage a quick slice with a sharp knofe would have sorted it. However, now that would be a receipe for...
Tons of older stuff in the stash and my first on this group build is the relatively new Kokusai Ta-Go. Not a lot to it, my biggest gripe is while Brengun molded the tail pieces with the connecting points NOT connected to the pour blocks, the wings - on the other hand - are...

Perhaps there was a twin seat trainer version you could build to accompany this. Though I imagine the attrition rate of instructors and students was rather high.
This will be an attempt to do a Supermarine S.5, one of the Schneider Trophy winners from the Venice race in 1927. Alas, there aren't any kits of it out there so I'll be making it out of plastic card. It's a tricky shape but hopefully by...

So, a lifetime of Blohm & Voss and obscure Soviet aircraft from the 30s it is for you?
OK, I'm overdoing it. This is my third placeholder and I haven't started anything in the Group Build yet. The first project of the year (Italeri 1:72 F-104A) has been dragging along but the end is finally in sight. Hopefully just a week more tops.
Yesterday I...

Like Greg, I'm really interested in this kit too. The possibilities for quick conversions such as a Miles Hawk, Hawk Major or Speed Six make it even more attractive.
Just realized, I don't even have anything started in this GB! So hereby at least I commit myself! :D
Watching all the beautiful builds around - very inspiring! Yet I wanted to do something not yet covered in this GB.
So I dug out the Miniwing Sea Hawk still waiting to join the...

Excellent progress, Fritz. And regarding tail-sitting, some resin kits can be a real pain. Anigrand kits are good because the fuselages are usually hollow, allowing for ballast to be added. However, manufacturers like FE-Resin/Miniwing, Welsh Models and Kami de Koro cast their...
I'm nearly there on the massive Convair seaplane so I thought I might make a gentle start on the next 'Anything but injected' build while the last pieces fall into place. Something smaller this time...
As many here know, Anigrand provides four kits in each box. There is the...

Talk about an ugly duckling ! Definitely not my cup of tea but interested to see how it comes out and, while we're at it, how you deal with the struts.
I'm sure you all heard about Beacon Models and their interesting project for new plastic kits productions. I'm very excited about this, especially for the Spitfire Mk.1 that need a model in our scale conformed to the actual quality standard.
Disclaimer: this will not be a very exciting pair of builds!
Back in the mists of time we had a Cold War GB on here. Back then I had a very limited mancave and little spare time so I resolved to build because it was easy and I was just really getting into photographing...

Thanks Smeg! Goodness me that Swordfish crew must have had balls of steel with those big 12 inch naval guns opening up on her no matter how much line you'd paid out to separate you from the drogue!
Well now done. Some final pictures in decent light.
With the Lightning nearly finished my next project is the Air Wing of HMS Eagle in the 1960's. Five models, two resins, two vac forms and a conversion of a vac form............................................
Of course Angus will have this lot ready by the end of February,....

Some terracotta coloured Milliput and we are on the road to a COD Gannet.

The big hole will be covered in bass wood (Lime great for carving)
Taking the lead from others, this is a placeholder as it is unlikely I’ll get started on any builds until I’ve moved and set up at my new rental address.
As I mentioned in the GB14 General Discussion, I am spoilt for choice with an overly large number of resin kits in my stash....

That's looking like an airplane!
the canopy smashmold is a 144 must-have skill. I have several s.o.s. kits stuck waiting for that step to get on.
looks like this plane will get built! Ive never finished a kami de koro kit. :\
I will soon begin working on my next resin kit. This time it's an EMBRAER Brasilia. The kit is from Duarte Models.

Just a few parts. It came with an extra propeller, which might be handy as I can see myself breaking one with my clumsy hands. The landing...

Should be a good 'un. I wish more resin kit manufacturers would go down the path of including white metal undercarriages, particularly for solid fuselage castings like this one. The weight begs for rigid support and some resin undercarts are just too flimsy.
Roberto’s beautiful work with the Altaya/IXO aircraft is a great reminder that even diecasts can serve as the basis for repaints and conversions. True, with even the former, there’s some ground work involved, with the minimum requirement being to fill those cavernous voids...

To see what I could do in reducing the impact of the panel lines and to address a few areas on the underside which looked utter cr*p up close. Whilst I've been working from home today, I migrated one metre to my left and overcoated the etch with the Tamiya primer. Much more even...
As I regularly build resin things anyway (around half my output last year was resin), I want to use this GB to force me to build big resin things. Or particularly difficult resin things. I think I'll have a crack at this. Anigrand's latest typically niche release:...

Luis, your Winjeel has arrived in my stash and I can concur that your 3D-prints are definitely worth paying for the FUD quality (or whatever Shapeways calls it now). Lovely model. I will definitely take a leaf out of Roberto's book and do a plunge-mould of the canopy. And if my...
I'm going to make a second placeholder since this is a year-long GB. Something completely different from my usual. It's the MiG-31 Firefox , the advanced stealth fighter that Clint Eastwood's character steals from the Soviet Union in the film Firefox . I was really...

Update: 30 bids and $US50.00 excluding postage, GST and whatever else.
This will be my first group build.
Anything not injected sounds like a fine reason for something not very common in this scale, an Autogyro!
A year is about right for me as my builds can be agonisingly slow.
At the end of last year I did a bit of practice with 3D modelling and...

I am from Brazil but I moved to Germany 2 years ago. I live in Donauwörth, Bavaria.
This is a altaya die cast do-217 with a new nose/canopy made by Peter hawkins and a resin wing 144 kit of Lippisch P13A
I had some problems with primer/thinner/paint in do-217(due metal I had changed the primer)
But since the Lippisch cover the area.. is camouflaged

Concur with that last comment. Altaya/IXO releases are often at least half plastic which not only improves the detail and makes them easier to modify, it also makes the models considerably lighter (thinking about international postage here). Whilst some filling here and there is...
One of my meta projects is a fleet of all aircrafts that have Air Marshall Islands titles.
not a long list! I have two done, both Welsh vacuforms, and a what-if, part IM part resin,

note to self: note starboard side flag orientation
Every year I try to build at least one large aircraft. The last two years I built medium-sized aircraft (RB-45 Tornado and Do 18G) and both in resin. This year I'm going bigger: the Blohm & Voss Bv 222 Wiking, the largest flying boat to attain (limited) production...
