The second Group Build where the theme is a significant year in history and we again hark back 80 summers. Whereas the events of 1940 largely centred around conflict in Europe, two years on and the battlefront has expanded dramatically following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As of January 1942, we are also six months into the Great Patriotic War on the Eastern Front. Whilst aircraft will no doubt abound, anything relevant to 1942 is fair game. And it doesn’t have to be military in nature either!
Runs from 4 January to 31 December 2022.
I've found I have several 1942 kits already built (and the list of candidates in my stash is considerable). I'll be making several posts divided by theatre/subject. I post them to serve as inspiration to others to join this Group Build ;) !

Most (actually: almost all  ) of my models are still in the transport boxes after the move. I should have some more fitting in the 1942 category, but those are the only pictures I have:
Aircraft are both Revell Minis, vehicles are from Arrowhead.
Despite more &^$#* work, the GB20 Argosy is progressing, albeit at glacial speed, and the Doolittle Raid Mitchell is still waiting for me to extract the digit and mask it for a coat of good ol’ Olive Drab. With my query about ultrafine wire and all the excellent feedback, I’ve...

I think it only fair that you should warn your grandkids that, if they dedicate their lives to modelling, conundrums like these will give them many sleepless nights.
And for all those grammatical whizz-kids out there, it is conundrums and not conundra , as the word is not of...
I'm doing it again, getting ahead of myself. Oh well, here goes  .
Last night I was looking at the list I made of potential subjects for this GB and I was thinking that the Fw 200 would be great as it would also cover my idea to build at least one large...

I echo the sentiments of Angus and Fritz. Another delightful build and an extremely informative thread that will be a priceless resource for anyone else contemplating constructing this handsome aircraft.
After 2 jets I want to make something different. I had the P-40E in the stash and it does fit into the 1942 GB, so, let's go!
The AFV P-40s are nice kits and many beautiful models have already been presented in this forum. That's what you get:

I have a huge project ongoing: WWII U.S. medium tanks in all their operational versions and subtypes, including funnies, lend lease, SP guns, tank destroyers, funnies (the line keeps growing as I discover new types and try to include them -mostly by scratchbuilding-): see here...

Actually they ARE (or were) offered separately.
Usually you get a generic small decal sheet (German crosses, US stars..) with several of their models.
I've been able to buy almost all of them from their site before this 'no checkout' problem: they are sold in pairs (so if you...
November 1942 the Allies land troops on the North African coast.
My examples will be,
The Revell Dauntless,

The Trumpter LCM 3,

and finally,

No problem. I used the decals on an M.11/39, but in the 1/100 scale for which they are intended. I think that if you use them on the slightly larger M.13/40 in 1/144 then they will be acceptable. However, like you, I couldn’t find hard evidence of an Australian operated tank...
For my second entry in this GB, I chose one of my favorite aircraft.
The Me-262 is better known as a late war weapon, but its first jet powered flight was in July 1942, in Leipheim not so far from where I live now.
So my plan is to make the aircraft flown by test pilot Fritz...

Lovely Luis!! Well worth the extra work and great result
Yeah I'll break up this aircraft monopoly by having a go at a couple of Tiger 1's from Schwere Panzer Abteilung 502 outside of Leningrad in the winter of 1942. The kit is the 2 in 1 Dragon 1/144 effort. Should be a quick build but the painting will challenge things....

A nice pair of Tigers. I've tried tanky things, difficult to get them to look anything but toy like. You've mastered the art Ian.
My first GB18 build was knocked over in barely a fortnight because of the Christmas-New Year closedown of the universities here in Oz, coupled with a driving need to make the most of the hiatus before the manic workload of a Government re-registration audit kicks in. Barely...

Angus, you spoke too soon. Sweet young Ms Adams since 12 Feb modelwise. I've had to find a suitable storage container to keep Mitch free from a build-up of dust approaching Himalayan proportions.
Here we are 8-), only hours separate from history 😎.
In the sticky steamy Pacific heat, the pilots leave the meeting room in the carrier's womb and head for the hangar. The lights in the hangar are on and the mechanics are getting ready to do their job. They look at the clock...
For once, a GB intersects with my current plans  !
Once I finish the odd couple I'm currently working on (Airfix Buffalo Mk.I & F-Toys B-339C), I will be building at least three of Mark I Models' kits... and all are machines in 1942!!! And there is a...

This will be my long term build. I've had this kit in the stash for a very long time. It will be OOTB. The etch sets would cost over £40 and with the current energy prices I'd rather be warm. I could buy the Colourcoats paints, but at £3 per pot plus £7.50 MINIMUM delivery, no...

Some etched ladders arrived in the post today, so on they have gone. The Skippers dog has turned up on the bridge. I have started 'rigging' the railings with invisible thread, painted white.
I went through my stash and found around 30 kits that could fit in this GB. I hope I can build several of them during this year.
Among the selected kits I have several from the Revell's Micro Wing series, which I purchased more for sentimental reasons.
The very first kit I ever...

Yep, that's the same kit, David. In an early release. Even mine still had some crisp details. It's a nice kit, considering its age.
The instructions are the same, except the ones from mine are in English (it's posted on the first page of this build).
Admittedly I havn't really started any of the GBs yet - but I have a plan 8-) !
For the 1942 GB, by rummaging my stash, I found an almost forgotten Takara Bf-109 E-7 in the markings of ZG 1, with the wasp - nose , normally known on Bf-110s. I did some research and found out,...

👏👏👏👏👏verry nice
The model but also the truck and the base 👍
I am expecting that time on the workbench will be at a premium during at least the first half of 2022 with the evil spectre of work likely to curtail any “cunning plans” for an Angus-like production schedule. So, with that in mind, my first contribution to GB18 will be a kit I...

Thanks for this information on the Spitfire VIII wing tank location, I had forgotten this difference. I have a mind to make a Burma VIII to complement the XIV completed recently. The retractable tail wheel mod isn’t too difficult (did this previously for a VII).
Italian WW2 planes are very rare in 1/144 scale, and the Sweet Macchi is maybe the only mainstream model in not pre painted plastic. It's a great kit with fine details and shape very well catched. Anyway is far from perfection. Flat engine detail, closed cockpit, closed wheels...

Can't you use a micro flat screwdriver (2mm's wide) and scrape the inside out to deepen the wheel wells?
I picked up and started tinkering with a 'Cletrac M2 High Speed Tractor' (more concisely known as the 'bomber nurse') and it turns out these were introduced into service in 1942… so why not include here.
The Cleveland Tractor (CleTrac) Company produced the M2 for the USAAF...

Ray Rimes does some great stuff and in your hands turns into a beauty.
At the beginning of the war with Japan, one US Navy aircraft that stood out and took its place in aviation history during 1942 was the Douglas SBD Dauntless so it's fitting it gets a place here in this GB.
Following my planned overdose of Buffaloes, I've decided...

Nice! I've never seen these kits up close before. Lovely box art too.
