Aircraft Profile Resource

#1

Post by schoon »

There was a website that had a collection of profile views of fighter, bombers, and transports across a number of eras.

If memory serves it originally had a ".ru" suffix, but had recently moved to a new server address.

I can't find it for the life of me.

Can anyone help out?

It was Wings Palette but I have no idea where it’s gone, unfortunately.

Wings Palette used to be reachable using http://wp.scn.ru/en. However, around May last year, the site went down and hasn't returned. Whether this has anything to do with it being of Russian origin, I don't know. However, it was one of my fave "go to" sites for yonks. Another site which is extremely useful is https://www.asisbiz.com. The Aviation, Military History and Il2 menus contain a wealth of great photos and profiles.

For a while, Wings Palette moved to wpalette.com

...but it looks like that one is currently down as well.

What other good resources exist for this? I used to love the ability to compare and contrast different aircraft versions and squadron markings.

Not comprehensive yet but they keep adding new things every week. It’s pretty massive.

Yes, this one is a goody. I'd visit it from time to time, but lost the URL when I updated my PC, so many thanks for reminding me what it was. :)

Must admit I am rather skeptical about profiles with a photo attached. So many turn out to be rather hypothetical or based on very old assumptions that have been long ago disproven, like the all-over RLM70 on pre-war Luftwaffe 109s

True. That's why I'll often use these sorts of sites to gauge possible painting options for builds, then go and confirm (or otherwise) the schemes elsewhere, including reference books and specialist sites. Tim's example is a classic one ... no doubt more than a little blood was shed over the years between those who proposed the one-colour approach and those who reminded us of other colours, like RLM71 and RLM02. ;)
