ANZAC Day 2020

#1

Post by smeg1959 »

The current global situation has had a marked effect on us all in many different ways. So for Australians and New Zealanders, the 2020 version of ANZAC Day has been like none other. No public gatherings at the Dawn Service, no parade through the city streets, no old Diggers catching up for a beer at the local pub or RSL (Returned Services League). But we've found ways around this, as reflected in this article.

As I was doing my weekly 5am Saturday morning newspaper round (in my car, I hasten to add - pretty difficult carting around 400+ papers otherwise), I was humbled to see so many fellow Aussies - young and old, some still in their dressing gowns and pyjamas - standing silently in the streets outside their homes, candles burning, radios tuned to the Dawn Service from the War Memorial. Lest we forget.

That is quite moving. Great so many found a way to mark Anzac day. Strange that the competition between England, Aus and NZ in sport is so fierce, yet the respect so deep.

Ps. A paperboy at your age and building toy aeroplanes? A severe case of arrested development! :D ;)
