Shapeways 1/144 Vendors

"Shapeways 1/144 Vendors"
I thought it about time to recap on the movers and shakers on the Shapeways 1/144 scene, there has been quite a bit of action on this the Shapeways front over the last year or so. With CGD and Kampfflieger leading the way in AFV and Aircraft respectively there are now a number of other designers following in their footsteps. The significant growth area has surprisingly been the growth in WWI aircraft to support the "Wings of War" (WoW) and relaunched "Wings of Glory" (WoG") scene. What the list does not show is those companies using Shapeways to master items in order to recast or supplement thier conventional casting techniques such as http://www.miniwing.cz or Japan's 'Tripplenuts (http://triplenuts000.seesaa.net/)', other suppliers such as Foxone (http://foxonemodel.fc2web.com/) are using other commerical 3D printers such as Object24

One of the best parts of Shapeways system is that you can combine items from many of the Shapeways stores and suppliers on to one order!!

Some sites do not have all their 1/144 items in a category, or even if there is a 1/144 category, not all 1/144 may be referenced within it- which is annoying!

I'm sure CGD, Kampfflieger, Matti and Decapod can all give you considerably more info, but here goes ...

Shapeways uses 3D printer technology to produce solid objects from 3D CAD files. I believe the norm are Stereo Lithography (STL) files ... feedback, any of the above? Shapeways then "print out" the creation using any one of several different materials, mostly plastics. The raw material can be blended with some form of colourant if required, but most of us would recommend either Strong White & Flexible (SWF) or the translucent Frosted Ultra Detail (FUD). SWF is the cheaper option, but the surface is a little coarse, giving the appearance of fine pitting. Judicious use of fillers/primers and modeller's sandpaper usually fixes this issue nicely. If you want the "Bee's Knees", choose FUD - considerably more expensive material but the surface coarseness is minimal, making fine detail stand out. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shapeways and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQoTro9WfbQ. For a good brief intro to 3D printing, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3d_printing.

If you don't want Shapeways to make your creation, there are some other companies around the globe that provide a similar service. Of course, if you're really keen, you can buy a 3D printer. These were originally extremely expensive (hence the reason companies like Shapeways started in the first place) but have come down in price dramatically in the last couple of years. I see one small unit even retailing at under $US1000 here in Australia (http://www.3dprintersuperstore.com.au/c ... pQodjC8A7g). Of course, it won't have the specs of the professional machines that Shapeways would use, and you still have to get the print material, but its certainly a viable option now. A good overview of the home 3D printing market appears in this article from the Australian, a national newspaper here in Oz ... http://www.theaustralian.com.au/austral ... 6383853583.

Shapeways accept several 3D file formats but they probably all end up as STL for the machines.

Some examples for you:
WSF (or SWF) - a nylon powder that is fused using a laser (Laser sintering)
A strong material, great for wargame models but rough. Min thickness about 0.6mm with 0.3mm surface detail
Close up of an observers cockpit on a 1/144 Junkers J.I (5mm across) as it arrived
Image

A finished Austin Ball AFB1 - The material is very porous, I use either coats of varnish or thinned PVA to fill first then paint and varnish.
Image

FUD - a UV cured resin, translucent, smooth, non-porus. Much more brittle, small parts break easily. Min Thickness 0.3mm, 0.1mm surface details.
Usually needs a bit of a clean in hot soapy water to get of wax residue. I find paint doesn't stick too well to it but a final coat of varnish protects it well.
A $5 handling fee from shapeways on top of being more expensive. Multiple models in a single print work out cheaper (hence my 1/144 FE-8 model)

1/144 pilot in FE8

FE8 model (wires are 0.6mm) - (the prop and peg are designed to be removed from the front and attached in the correct place :))

Just visited Shapeways to look at a couple of Kampfflieger's latest creations and, lo and behold, there's 480 listings for "1/144" on the site, with new 1/144 scale designers appearing in droves. So much for my plans to do a 3D CAD course and roll out my own line of printed models!

A query for Kampfflieger, Decapod, CGD, Matti et al ... I know about WSF and FUD, but does anyone know about "White Detail"? Pricewise, it's about halfway between the other two and has the advantage over FUD in that it is rated as "Medium" in terms of strength. The sample pics show it to be quite a glossy plastic material.
