updated list

I have been through an exercise of reviewing 1/144 providers on shapeways (deliberately left out 1/148, !/150 and 1/152 - and dont lets get started on all the people who offer "res-caling" options).

There are some really interesting items their with many designers providing a great range of prodicuts - a number of whom will be well known to you and are members of this forum, conversely there are a few gems in there that I had not seen or noticed before.

I got halfway through and thought - Doh!, I should have categorised them as I went a long..... but, maybe a job for the next revision, as I am sure the list will soon be out of date?
As with most ventures of this type 20% of the vendors provide 80% of the content - however some of the fringe providers provide items of interest and not covered by the others.

The list it presented 'as is' - all I can promise is that at the time i looked there was at least one obvious item on the site (some of the sites are not categorised very well and it can be a pain to navigate) - others literally have one item! Which kind of brings me onto the next point, I did not rank the sites and one person favourite is not another preference. If your are looking for 1/144 Warship upgrades your are equally well served as 1/144 Armour, Aircraft of space craft (Real or fictional) and on that point if your into real space, you are well serviced for exhaust nozzles

The most depressing point is the old price vs quality debate, notwithstanding Shapeways is not always the cheapest option - though with the price of some resin kits, it can be more competitive then first thought, especially for FUD AFVs. No the real problem is there is no apparent correlation between quality and detailed of a design and the offered cost - clearly the designer is at liberty to charge the premium they feel right for the fruits of their labours, but that is not always reflecting in the detail of the model.

I think a number of the cost issues maybe resulting from a number of designers

a) do not incorporate the use hollow spaces within their items, I do not know, if its because they do not know how to, do not have the right software or do not care?

b) use poor orientation and component breakdown - with large items (Aircraft especially) and though I may out on a limb here; I think more could be done to package the design for printing better inline with shapeways guidelines - its not necessarily going to be cheap to have a big cruciform shape that could easily be broken down into a more efficient package?

c) linked to the above, some may not have reworked their designs inline with the new shapeways policies - this is acknowledged by a number of the the larger designers and they are seeking to review their back catalogue in order to re-calibrate prices and this approach must be applauded.

d) some designer just appear to charge more than their peers?

Searching/Categorisation is also a hit an mis affair - some designers put it in the title of individual listings (makes it more obvious), others use the built in scale options - can be hard to work out which items are re-scalable from the title alone, and others use the 'labelling/tags' but this is inconsistent so the structured searches dont pull up items either... So, depending on how you search for item, inconsistent results are returned! So, this may mean that I have missed some? Some sites do not have all their 1/144 items in a category, or even if there is a 1/144 category, not all 1/144 may be referenced within it- which is annoying!

The final problem is you start making a small list of all the items that you think you would like and you end up with a long list and a wallet busting price... before, putting aside for another day.

Oh, and I nearly forgot - there are at least three designers offering 1/144 Dinosaurs ;)

133 and counting. With improvements in materials, print resolution and detailing, the almost exponential growth in 3D printing is predictable. Just like to see a few more competitors to Shapeways to keep them on their toes, particularly in terms of cost. So many things I want but can't afford using the higher-res materials. :(

Not sure we'll see many more direct competitors as home printers get cheaper.

Not 1/144 but this was printed on a friends Anet A8 (???) bought for £175 from Amazon (1/600 Project 22350 Gorshkov)
I sent him the model file thinking it would never work but this came back... he's still trimming the setup so it could be done better.
£30+ on shapeways WSF, £55 FUD or 50p of material at home

ImageIMG_20180208_135654612 by https://www.flickr.com/photos/86428152@N00/

Not commercially viable due to the 5 hour print time and handling to remove all the supports
Its going to need a bit of prep but should come up good eventually.

To reply to a few of those comments:
a) hollow spaces - these don't help much any more since shapeways now charge for "machine space" as well as material volume - it now costs to have hollow spaces
Imagine a wrapper a few mm around the surface of the object - this is part of the cost now, so the space between biplane wings makes them more expensive than monoplanes.

b) I've tried all sorts of shapes and sizes and it doesn't seem to make much difference in price. Orientation is generally controlled by shapeways, they make the adjustments for printing.

c) particularly in the case where shapeways now charge extra for each part, so joining with sprues makes them cheaper - but not in all cases I've found.

d) this is probably a big part I usually charge $1 for any model - it's just to fund my netflix, charities and other hobbies. I know others always charge $2 or $3

Decapod, thanks for the feedback, clearly some aspects of shape quays has can fwd since I last used in any way.

A new one (to me anyway) is JARFIR. Looks like some pretty decent AFVs in 1/144 and other scales. Almost exclusively Smooth Fine Detail Plastic (SFDP).

JARFIR has been around for a while.
I should probably publish my excel spreadsheet, as I do a deep trawl now and then to dig out what's going on (the blogspot page only has a shortlist on it). It is made harder by the fact that a) sharp ways metadata handling and therefore searches are patchy and b) vendors don't mark up their models correctly (esp structuring there stir categories properly.

The other interesting aspect of a deep trawl is when you find the same subject across different sites and seeing how the prices vary regardless of the polygon count/detail of a subject. Its not alway to any apparent logic (shape ways pricing models aside)
