Museu do Ar, Sintra, Portugal - August 2019

Post by Mig88 »

Hello all!

Here is a link to photos I took at the main premise of the Museu do Ar at Base Aérea No1 in Sintra, Portugal this past summer (August 2019). The museum has three premises, the other two being in Alverca (where the museum started), NE of Lisbon, and Ovar up in northern Portugal. I went to Alverca in August 2018 (a link will follow eventually) and this year decided to visit the main section at Sintra (NW of Lisbon).

I've done some research on each type and added the information to the photos (the "i" in a circle). Most are real machines that served but some are not so "authentic" ;) !
I managed to do walkarounds of some of them. I hope they can serve as reference and/or inspiration. Enjoy!!

My apologies. I didn't get the link properly. I have replaced the link for the proper one. It should work now.

I've been there a few years ago; I've seen Castelo dos Mouros and Convento dos Capuchos but I have totally missed this interesting museum.

Great set of photos, the museum is amazing, not the largest collection around but all in all a pretty in-depth representation of Portuguese military aviation... One plane i wish they had is the DH-88 "Salazar" it's the only DH-88 sold operated outside the UK...

Thank you!

Moresby, the museum is some 6-7km NE of Sintra. There is no public transport there so it's either getting there by private car or taxi (my case!).

cs-tbr, true! At least, it still exists although under private ownership in the UK.

Excellent photographs, Miguel. Outside of Europe, I guess many of us would be more aware of Spanish military aviation, so it's nice to see the Portuguese counterpart. Very snazzy scheme on the Alpha Jet and the camo on the Ju52-3m would make a nice contrast with some of its Luftwaffe brethren.

Thanks Smeg.
Spending most of my holidays in Portugal, it was a shame not to make the effort to visit the museum, especially as here in Barcelona, where I live, there is nothing of the kind anywhere near (mostly, for political reasons). I don't drive so I had to find ways to get to both premises without having to depend on anyone else. I had been to Alverca twice (early 1980s and in 1993) so returning, and taking photos this time, was a must for me!
I hope to manage to make a one-day trip in the future to Madrid to the air museum there. It has quite an interesting and diverse collection too.
