HMA F-2A/B

The kit comes in a very large box and is extremely well packed. It comes with three sprues, which are larger than usual for the lower than usual number of parts. The giant clear sprue has two canopies each for the F-2A and the two seat F-2B. You can build one or the other, and it has a separate top front fuselage and separate intake depending on the version.

The surface detail is good (maybe a little overdone on the fuel tanks). It has the deepest intake of any 1/144 F-16 kit, going all the way back to the (nicely detailed) engine intake fan - something even most larger scale models don't do. Tires are molded separately from wheel hubs, making painting easier. The wheel wells are very well detailed. The nose cone is slide-molded, although it isn't really clear why. The wings are thicker than the Revel F-16 kit and don't have the twist, but that's correct for the F-2 aircraft.

The cockpit does not have a lot of detail and no decals for it are provided. There are no weapons besides two AAM-3 missiles. The thickness of some of the detail parts is overdone. Things like the fins on the missiles or the landing gear supports are not up to modern standards and could do with sanding or replacing. The exhaust is particularly thick, and should probably be hollowed out or replaced with a F-16 aftermarket part.

The instructions are super high quality, glossy color printed. You get decals for 3 F-2A, 2 F-2B, and a hypothetical JASDF "F-16J". There are no special schemes among them.

It's a nice kit, but the Revell is still far and away the leader in the F-16 category.

Concur with spejic's review.

I purchased the kit for the two-seat option.
If anyone wants the single seat version, I recommend the Platz F-2A kits.

Rise144Models offers F-16 "open" and "closed" GE engine nozzles.

Those pics do not inspire me to order one. Cute that they sell an resin set to fix some of these issues. Really we just need somebody to use the molds from the Tomytec models.

I definitely agree with that. Some of that Tomytec stuff was/is wonderful.

Did Platz never do the F-2B?
