Welsh Models 1/144 BAe Jetstream

#1

Post by MerlinJones »

In a sad attempt to try and regain some modelling dignity, I ordered a Jetstream from Welsh Models.
When I opened the packaged, I discovered it to be resin and metal! Not vacform!

RESULT!

Out came my trusty razor saw and off came the resin pouring stub...and then I remembered to photograph the experience, as you do.

Sanding took place.

I had so much fun with that Jetstream, I went and ordered another one!

Metal cleaned up;

Image

...And added to the rest;

Image

NOTE that I've chopped the tip off.
This model also came with some nice PE bits;

An RAF bird is long overdue...

Later Welsh Models does away with boxes;

Image

Image

Very nice resin pieces, plus some very useful white metal, icluding a metal nose for weightQ Also included are PE prop blades, which is nice.

Image

Decals look superb.

First task was to ensure that both mating surfaces for the main resin fuselage and white metal nose were suitably clean. (At least this time, I don't have to worry about nose-weight!

Image

The nose was added and was, to be fair,a pretty good fit. Only a little light sanding was necessary to completely blend it in and hide the join. I also cleaned up the mating surfaces of the two wings, which are both cleanly cast and commendably thin;

Image

Fixing these to the fuselage was issue-free and I somehow manag to get the dihedral just right, first time.

Image

There was only a little clean-up for the two white-metal engine nacelles. A bit of a moulding seam to remove and then some drilling for the exhaust.

Image

There's no indication on the wings to really help with placing the engines. However, Welsh Models' diagrams are 1/144 scale, so I was able to use these to guide my engine-placement.

I had some fun painting the tiny wheels, but my Punch & Die set helped me here. I rilled holes to give the fine metal legs something to bite into.

Image

Of course, I do confess to a sneaky sigh of relief when I was able to do this;

Image

I've now begun to add the white;

So, after 3 coats of matt white, a couple of coats of Humbrol H166 Light Aircraft Grey;

Image

...Then Humbrol H174 Signal Red, chosen because it matches the red of the decals.
