Minicraft 1/144 Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina SAR

#1

Post by MerlinJones »

Whilst early Minicraft 1/144s were the reason many modellers shunned the scale, their later kits are quite lovely. This Catalina is one of those.
This kit was later re-issued as the Black Cat and mine can be seen
here.
I picked up this particular example from a big model show, long, long ago, for a quid, because it was missing a few bits.

Given the framing and thickness of the transparency, I'm not overly concerned about the interior. I had to scratch a base piece for the forward turret and have omitted the guns and I've also added the nosebay doors in the closed position, as these were also missing. (This model will be depicted airborne).;

The little engines are nicely moulded and painted up well;

Fit of parts is good and I soon got to this point, with the transparencies glued into place with Serious Glue, which is not setting solid;

After masking the turret, I decided to try a Plan B for the canopy...intending to use a cocktail stick to remove unwanted paint later;

The blue-grey is H144.

The decals appeared to be okay and I haven't had any problems with Minicraft decals before, however...

Some masking and painting would be needed.
I applied Liquid Decal film to the rest of the decal sheet and these were effectively saved and became usable once more.

Nicely done, and all done in one sitting? :shock:
I agree that the Cat is one of the best Minicraft kits.
Odd about that decal sheet. Are the red bars on the cockades off register?

Thanks Jonathan, but this was an older build I hadn't placed in here previously and I felt I needed to, to facilitate my posting of a link in the Painting Showcase.
To answer your question, the decals were poor.

Firstly, lovely work. The various SAR versions of the Cat lend colour to any seaplane collection. ;)

The Cat has always been one of my all-time faves so I was delighted to get up close and personal with the restored PBY-6A at the RAAF Air Show last year. Definitely one of a kind design-wise ... somewhat ungainly on the ground but as graceful as when up in the air. Totally agree with Jonathan's comments about the Minicraft kit being one of their best in 1/144. Clearly the same comment couldn't apply to the decals in your case, Bruce. I always wonder how Quality Control (assuming there is such a thing at some model manufacturing companies) can let sheets go out where colours are so badly out of register as the red is clearly here. I bought a large sheet of the normally good Warbird decals off evilBay and every damned red spot is off-centre in the RAF roundels, making at least half the sheet completely useless. I'd prefer the ALPS approach where the blue and white are printed together and the red spot is a separate entity. Then if there's any issue of register, it's the modeller's own fault.
