FE Resin 1/144 Yokosuka (Kugisho) E1Y2/3

I'll be building both the E1Y2 and the E1Y3. Differences between the two are slight; one has a larger tail and one a 4-bladed prop.

The Yokosuka E1Y was a Japanese floatplane of the 1920s and saw service in the Sino-Japanese conflict. The E1Y3 had a better engine than its predecessor and better performance.

As such, my inbox review here should suffice for both kits.

Having painted the interiors a rusty red primer, I added the seating, painted iron. The rear gunner has an insert, carrying the ring upon which his gun will sit. This is in place in the lower model;

At this point, I've also added the radiators.
Lower wings next;

Then tails;

Now for some tricky bits;

I was in with half a chance with those struts...nothing complicated, simply straight up, perpendicular all round...superglue and accelerator...a wicked combination!

I'm now thinking how best to proceed;
Painting, rigging, then the upper wing?
Upper wing, then painting and rigging?

...And I think I'll go all authentic and mix up some pale grey and silver paint.

I couldn't help myself...just had to add the upper wing;

Image

I know...got a strut to straighten!

Image

Next, it's the mess of struts for the floats, with each needing some removal of resin wafer;

Image

The cabanes were tricky...

I have to say that I was disappointed by the result of my grey-silver mixture. I was hoping for a little metallic sheen, but this didn't appear.
Anyhow...grey applied, with black for the struts, silver front bits and a red tail for the E1Y3;

Image

I then got onto an undisturbed roll and completed the builds and added the decals...one of which didn't like Humbrol Mattcote!

Unusual little pair to add to the ever-growing number of IJN floatplanes, not surprisingly almost all from Japanese sources. Pity about the decal and the clear coat. I've had similar with Tamiya's rattle-can stuff and the odd decal here and there. I even had one US star ... yep, blue and white ... turn pink. Fortunately, you can always slap another decal over the top.

a grey/metal colour.
I have slowly experimented with some paints for the F22 (i still have on back-burner) and I think I have had some reasonable success with a ratio of about 70 metal paint to 30 grey paint..
an example would be Humbrol Aluminium 56? and Humbrol 154? light grey. It depends on the angle though... :)
