Ian's Choices Il-2 vs Me109F

#1

Post by cowleyi »

Hello All,

I am out of the blocks early with this one. Zvesda's wargaming early model Il-2 Sturmovik vs the Sweet Model Co Me109F in winter guise. Both will be completed as winter aircraft as notes end of 1941 or so. The Zvesda plane will be generically camoed and then a distressed whitewash applied. The 109 will depict Hans Eckhard Bob's aircraft.

Progress so far:

The underside of the Il-2. Its is very simple with about 6 or so parts to the kit.

The uppers at this point, Smeg, Mate, just for you - a detailed photo of how I get my preshading - note the mottles with a couple of darker greens that the final colour on a white primer base then a fine overspray of the final colour. Given it will be white washed I won't go back over the final colour with a slightly lighter shade.

Propblurs ready for cutting up and attachment.

stay tuned :o

Sweet versus Zvezda. Definitely at opposite ends of the detail spectrum. Ian, you'll be finished your first pairing before half of us have decided what we're going to build! :o

Hello All,

Yes, Peter it is the good ole hairspray technique. It is a lot of fun to do and with a little bit of care you can get good results. My method is pretty similar to the mainstream. Seal your basecoat in a lacquer or enamel based flatcoat and let dry. I use testors dullcoat. Once dry I use a regular commercial hairspray decanted into the airbrush and sprayed on the surfaces you want to cover. Once dry you can spray with an acrylic paint via airbrush - If you dilute your paint only use an alcohol base (acrylic thinners). Once you have sprayed your acrylic white or off white don't let it dry out. add some water to the surface and use a stiff bush, toothpick or old toothbrush and lightly rub and the white will lift off - you do have to be careful or you can lift off whole sheets of the paint rather than little bits at a time :? . Try it out on a practice kit.... it's worth it :D
