Mark W - Migs vs the World

Spitfire versus Bf109? MiG-15 versus Sabre? Stuka versus T-34? Martians versus humans? Any pair of 1/144-scale items that were pitted against each other in mortal combat are fair game. Get those creative juices flowing ...

Mark W - Migs vs the World

Hi,

I have 6 Mig-21s on the Shelf of Doom at the moment - 4x Attack and 2x Eduard.

The Eduard kit is definitely much more refined than the Attack, but nothing really wrong with the Attack kit at all.

Am thinking to build:
- Iraq Mig-21 vs Iran F-14 (Trumpeter)
- Egypt Mig-21 vs Israel F-16 (Revell)

I have built a few Revell f-14s, but not the Trumpeter. The surface detail on the trumpeter kit looks very nice. The intakes are thinner than the Revell.

The Revell kit is an f-16c, but there are parts to backdate to a f-16a which is handy.

Using Vector144 decals:
- Persian Cats
- Viper's Venom
- Egypt Based Fishbeds

These look really nice. I got the Egypt based Fishbeds sheet for free with an order - in fact I ended up with 2 sets! Even though I didn't mean to order these, there's some really interesting versions there. The Eduard sheet focuses on relatively peaceful Eastern European planes.

If things go well, I might even build some F-4s from this sheet vs a few more Migs...

More than a handful of possibilities there for sure, Mark. Which given your wealth of MiG-21s is just as well! Look forward to watching these come to fruition.

Hi,

Have done some work on the "bogies".

Stripped off most of the old paint, and installed the pylons.

Thought the fit of the tailplanes for the Attack was looking a bit dodgy so installed these ahead of painting. Very tricky to align...

Hi,

Have done some more work on these.

Fit of the canopies on the Attack Migs was pretty bad. Popped them off, and sanded the canopies down. A bit better now, but the canopies are noticeably wider than the Eduard.

02 attack-canopy-after.JPG
Pitot tube on the Eduard is piece which butt-fits to the nose. Looks a bit over-scale to me.
03 eduard-pitot.JPG
No pitots for the Attack - drilled a hole and attached some 0.4mm rod, sanded to a sharp point.

Eduard surface detail looks pretty amazing.

Here's the Attack SMT primed. Surface detail is quite nice, so long as it's not sitting next to an Eduard kit!

And the Attack MF - still some filling/smoothing work to do.

Here's all 6 primed.

Hi,

Have applied the first layer of paint...

The lineup is as follows:
- Black - Slovakia
- Dark Green - Russia
- Khaki Drab - Iraq
- Sand - Egypt
- Grey - Syria
- Silver - Vietnam
1st-colour-lineup.JPG
For Slovakia, I first put on a nice white coat - only to decide masking would be much easier with black first!
