Peter's Wirraway V Ki-43-I Oscar

Spitfire versus Bf109? MiG-15 versus Sabre? Stuka versus T-34? Martians versus humans? Any pair of 1/144-scale items that were pitted against each other in mortal combat are fair game. Get those creative juices flowing ...
Runs from 7 May 2016 to 17 July 2016.

Not sure where you found this information?

Doh!
Actually that quote is from the Pacific Wrecks website here:
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/w ... 0-103.html

Actually the observers name is Sergeant J L (Les) Coulston !
Picture of PO Archer and Sgt Coulson in front of the Wirraway: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/014032/
and in it: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/014031/

Picture of the Wirraway in Jan 1943 a month after the victory:
wirraway.jpg
wirraway1.jpg
And a great shot of it flying upside down prior to leaving for PNG: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P00279.002
I suspect that it was repainted and the underwing serial removed prior to operations!

Peter

pbhawkin wrote:So now I need to find a suitable Oscar to build with markings of the 11th Sentai!
Don't know if these will help. The first depicts Hayabusa tail markings for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Chutai, respectively, of 11 Sentai.
Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa - 11 Sentai (02).jpeg
The second is a profile depicting a Hayabusa of Senti Hombu, 11 Sentai. Sentai Hombu essentially translates to "Headquarter's Flight", hence the combination of all three chutai flashes.
Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa - 11 Sentai (01).jpeg
These were scanned from "Emblems of the Rising Sun - Imperial Japanese Army Air Force Unit Markings" by Peter Scott, an excellent book I picked up in a little bookshop in Daylesford in country Victoria a few years ago.

Thanks Greg.
I will do it as this aircraft as there are no known marking or serials:

Although this one (which was restored in NZ and is now in USA) looks very interesting but I fear it represents late 1944 colours not Dec 1942:

By the way models of the plane are hard to find!
I have a FeResin one from Hannants on the way and have only found three (3) on Ebay!!! One a Bandai in Silver (bidding on this one), One a kit by Mitsuwa (stupid US postal charge of $29.52!!) and a metal one by Reviresco.

Hello Peter,

Fascinating stuff on the appropriate Sentai/Chokai.

Good Stuff Greg, ...Looks good, - This is the problem that I regularly have is a lack of resources to determine a particular unit. Can't wait to see how this moves on looking forward to the build Peter.

F-Toys did a trio of Oscars in their Wing Kit Collection 4, the series that includes the Mk V Spitfire and the Stuka. And if you go back to the dim and distant past, there's the elderly Revell-Lodela kit. Agree that there's surprisingly few up for grabs at the moment on evilBay.

Enough about the Oscar which I haven't even got yet(!) and back to the Wirraway.
Ta Da!
Basic painting is done (with some touch-ups here and there). It will be a bit weathered as can be seen in the B&W pictures previously.

Will add the central 'roll over' protection between the two seats and the Guns need to be fitted (need to find something that looks like a perforated barrel (aren't Brengun or Owl or someone doing barrels in 1/144?).
Regards
Peter

Moving along at a rate of knots, Peter. Wirraway, Hawk 75 ... who said throughput would be down in the absence of Merlin? Looking good all round.

Oh and Wege, it's Mark, not Martin. ;)
