Peter's Hawk75 v Swordfish and/or Walrus

Post by pbhawkin »

I have actually started the Hawk75 which is a conversion of the AFV P-40B.
I copied and cast the engine and nacelle from the Hwerke 3D printed Hawk prior to the group build starting as seen here:
http://www.kampfgruppe144.com/phpBB3/vi ... f=3&t=4542

But only grafted it onto the AFV kit this weekend.
Thanks to the group build it has allowed me to make my mind up about what scheme to do.
I will be doing the Vichy one as per the picture in my opening thoughts:
http://www.kampfgruppe144.com/phpBB3/vi ... =37&t=4570

Although with regard to the swordfish in the picture, I doubt that it would still have it's torpedo on as the pilot would have jettisoned it as soon as attacked.
Secondly, I have to find a kit! The ones on Ebay are expensive at about $30+ each AND with ridiculous postage ($54 dollars from Canada.. Really!!).
Regards
Peter

DAMN it :D
I have now found records of a Vichy Hawk75 shooting down the ship borne Walrus from HMAS Australia!

"RAAF History

19/8/40 Embarked HMAS AUSTRALIA
25/8/40 Minor damage on board HMAS AUSTRALIA
26/8/40 Carried out recce of Tromso Harbour, Norway
25/9/40 Shot down by three Vichy French Curtiss 75A fighters while observing fall of shot for the RN/RAN bombardment of the French Fleet at Dakar, Senegal, "Operation Menace". Crew - Flt Lt G.K.I. Clarke, RAAF Lt Cdr Fogarty, RAN, PO Tel C.K. Burnett - all killed."

Maybe I will do both?

If I take the cover of the book as any guide:
camo.jpg

Here is the start of my version of the Vichy scheme.

painting1.jpg
painting2.jpg
lots to do (including touch-ups I see (damn close-ups)!
I cant go much further until I add the PE cowling flaps as they will also be red and Yellow stripped.
Three other profiles show that the 2.Esc of the GC 1/4 had three different patterns (one with the Gris Bleu Fonce (Grey) in place of the Brown) and with different heights of the under surface colour on the fuselage.
So I think I will stick as close to the painting.
I used a interior Green for the cockpit but should it be more 'Bronze Green'? Any thought?

Peter

PE has arrived and this photo shows adding the cowling pieces on:
cowling.jpg
And here I am going cross-eyed :o using decal strips to do the red!
vichy.jpg
It all looks bright and fresh but it will dull down a fair bit once I start weathering it.

Wheels are painted and decal seat belts put in as well.
still have to add instrument panel and control stick.....As well as do more Red decal stripes!!

Peter

Hey Peter, Yep that looks good, the decal effort looks as though it will be well and truly worth it.

That's adorable! (if I may use such a term for a weapon of war)
The Hawk isnt a particularly distinctive design by itself, but add a bit of color and youve got a show stopper

Way to go, Peter! Always loved Vichy colour schemes. Who cares that bright yellow and red stripes defeated the purpose of camouflage? Decal strips are the bees' knees. If it doesn't look right, just remove and cut another one. True, it can be time-consuming but nothing compared to masking and painting then finding the result isn't what you'd hoped for, requiring sanding and starting again. I know.

SLOWLY progressing on the stripes. I have to have a break after doing a section as my eyes get too tired and I can't focus (despite the magnifiers).
BUT, I have finished the Vichy markings (all 30 Red decal stripes) apart from some touch ups of Red to join the edges.
I have also cut out the rudder decal (French Tricolour markings from Methusla (YK-84-2)) after using another P-40 rudder as a template.

AND here is the a shot of Walrus L2247 (on loan from the FAA) from HMAS Australia that was shot down on the 25 Sep 1940:
JR_2A2_L2247.jpg
It will be in FAA colours. I have done the Sky undersides so far.
