While I'm waiting: Mitsubishi F1M2 from F-Toys

Time to hone those rigging skills! Any aircraft that possesses more than one wing is fair game - biplanes, triplanes, quadruplanes.
Runs from 3 June 2017 to 15 October 2017.

While I'm waiting: Mitsubishi F1M2 from F-Toys

While the good folks at Armory are trying to figure out what became of the Polikarpov I-15 I ordered from them back in April, I thought I'd have a go at something else as I wait for the matter to be resolved.

This is F-Toys' excellent little Pete that was released a year or so ago, and replaces their earlier version from the Seaplane Vol.1 collection that was released way back in 2005.
This one is a big improvement in overall accuracy and surface detail. With the exception of the heavy fabric effect on the wings and tail section. The dihedral on both wings is a bit much too, but nothing that can't be fixed.

The plan is to strip it down, sand the paint off and rework the panel lines and struts, new markings and whatnot. Same as one would do to any other injection moulded kit. Hopefully it will be a nice little holiday compared to some of the other stuff I've been working on lately.

Here's what you get:

April, May, June ... pretty normal for Australia Post nowadays so it might not necessarily be Armoury at fault.

For some strange reason, I didn't get a Pete - the original one or the much improved later version - so I'm going to watch this build with interest.

Ah you're absolutely right. Call me Mr. Hasty, it just arrived a few minutes ago!
Looks like I might be committed to two builds now...

It'll be good to see a detailed Step-by-Step, featuring an F-Toy model.
It's my madness that keeps me sane.

I'll see what I can do!

The first step for me is pull apart everything and scrape any locating lugs so that the components are no longer a snap fit. I find this reduces the risk of snapping or distorting pieces during test fitting and detailing. Once that's done I give the whole thing a sand with wet 1200 grit paper and lots of detergent. The aim is not so much to remove the paint, but to reduce the panel lines. I also take a file to the overscale fabric effect that F-Toys is so wedded to. I don't know what it is about that. Its like perfect opposite of the guy that used to do the panel lines for Matchbox. We really need to get those two crazy kids together!

So anyway, quite a bit of sanding. Keeping an eye on the depth of the panel lines as I go. Mostly I want them to be uniform. The final depth I'll try to control as I do the priming later.

The cowling need a bit of work. The cowl flaps and panel lines are unrealistically deep and would look better if rescribed. The width and depth of the cowling is just a tiny bit small too and looks slightly awkward when fitted into place, so some Tamiya white was spread on and sanded to shape. I started scraping and sanding all the struts to a third of their thickness too. The wing struts are slightly see-through when they get down to the correct size.

Image

Using dental burrs I thinned down the cockpit opening and interior walls. These look a bit too thick straight out of the box.

Image

Then while I was on the balcony squirting a couple of other projects with matt varnish and priming the Chaika as well, I gave the first a quick coat of grey for a first look.

Still lots to do, but its looking more like a normal kit now. ;)

Grrr! Bloody photobucket.

Thinning down the struts worked out okay. I also used primer and thinned out putty to reduce the panel lines to a tolerable level. I'll touch these up later as necessary. I also got a squirt of grey on today. The surface will need lots of smoothing, but you gotta start somewhere..

As a bonus, I "started somewhere" on a Mark I Gladiator too. The fuselage went under the knife and I removed about 1.6mm off of the mating surfaces of the fuselage as it was much too wide. I've noticed this with a couple of other Mark I kits too, which seem to have a bit more material added to the fuselage halves. I chopped the tail off to do this, then thinned it down separately before reattaching it.

The panel lines were reduced somewhat too, and the cowling was assembled before adding a ring to the opening and lots of tricky sanding to take care of the seams before rescribing (plenty left to do there).

Looking good. That Gladiator is an improvement already. Very nice. The u/c legs are also too long, just to forewarn you.
