S-2 Wilczur 1:144 scratch based on paper model

Post by Marudek »

Hello,

I would like to present my second vessel scratch built in 1:144. S-2Wilczur rescaled from a 1:50 paper model.

I made plug molds to termoform the hull and superstructure. Maybe some day I'll make the RAF rescue boat like this one:

Some parts I used are resin copies of HMS Snowberry pieces:

I designed and ordered some laser-cut card parts:

Finally I painted it:

After adding some wheathering and rigging the model is finished:

So far this is my 1:144 scale fleet 8-)

WOW!
Simply superb marudek.
You have a great eye for detail and I LOVE the laser printed card details.
I have always thought that there should be more of these available instead of PE parts. They are so easy to use and cheaper ad seem to be able to give a greater depth to some parts than what PE can do.
I have 3 of the 4 Mitsuwa PT boats (PT 109, Vosper and PT 73) but missing PT 207 US 'Mosquito' boat :( and also the half metal and half plastic German S-100 Schnellboot from De Agostini). These need to be much better detailed!!
Is it possible to get (buy) some sets of the laser card items? These would be useful on the two PT boats.
Regards
Peter

Hello,

Thank you for your kind words. I like card parts as an addition to plastic model because they are cheaper than PE and they have more volume. So far I've ordered laser-cut bits in three thicknesses: 0,25 0,5 and 1 mm. I think I could have asked for cutting window and skylight frames out of thinner card.

During the build I found that they are a bit too thick (0,25 mm). Unfortunately they were already on the model. Before assembly I soak cardbits with CA glue so they are as rigid as PE parts. That also allowed thinning window frames with power tool.

Peter, the models you've mentioned are beyond my reach as they are too expensive for me. I don't think l would ever make upgrades for them. But I plan to scratch build the Schnellboot basing on another card model. I promise to send you all details I make for it in the future so you can upgrade your model.

Unfortunately I can't tell when I start the Schnellbot as the next vessel I chose is HMCS Snowberry

Superb work! Inspirational on lots of levels, especially for those of us who don't normally model ships. Thank you so much for sharing, especially all the individual component development pictures...

I like your idea of using CA glue because I like to use card for some of my builds. How do you apply the glue, do you pour it into a dish or do you brush the glue on to the card?

Hi Mike,

It is very easy. First I cut the bit out of the 'frame' then I put a drop of CA aside and pick a tiny drop with a tip of a toothpick then I touch the card piece with it and usually the glue soaks in. Depending on part size I sometines have to smear the glue on the surhace to get the same result.

Once the glue is dry I can file down the 'bridges' (points of former connection to the 'frame'.

If few pieces need to be bond to forme one piece, then I first cut it all out and glue it all together and only then I soak the complete piece with CA glue.

I hope it helps :) if you have any further questions I'd be happy to answer.

Regards,
Peter

Wow. I have some of the old Mitsuwa 1/144 MTB kits but they were designed as motorised toys and have nowhere near that level of detail.

I have been working on downscaling an old Marcle models 1/400 card kit of the Seawraith frigate to my preferred scales of 1/700 and 1/1200 (for warships that is) but wouldn't have the guts to go for the level of detail in that scratchbuild.
