Maintenance Complete

Post by bluedonkey99 »

As I am not back at work until the 6th, there is a possibility that 'management' might sign-off on some Admin time on the forum (between the endless stream of visitors)

So, if the forum goes down/maintaince mode for a few days. Don't panic...

It will return :
A) the same :(
B) updated and ready for new joiners and features :D

Okay, I am preparing a new period of maintenance and upgrade to the forum.

I will need to shut down the forum in order
1) to complete a full back up, this is necessary to ensure that if the forum does not upgrade or becomes corrupted it can be recovered - luckily the current ISP has great automated tools for this!
2) perform an upgrade
3) test
4) make live or, roll back to the back-up

The upgrade will be in two parts (and half)

1) from phpbb 3.0.9 to 3.2 - this is the tricky bit as it only semi automated and requires manual steps.
then another back-up ( measure twice, cut once)
2( from phpbb 3.2 to 3.2 - this is an automated upgrade.....

I have started the peperation work, i hope to take the site down by Thursday / Friday and have it up early next week.

Fingers crossed and all that!

Did a "suck it and see" post elsewhere which worked, so I'm assuming the disabling is still on its way. With us all stuck in lockdown, it's a good opportunity to get some maintenance in. Keeping fingers crossed all goes well. With my excessive hours doing online stuff for the students, I'm not getting any time at the workbench, so browsing through the forum is currently my "lifeline" to the hobby.

Thanks again for all your tech savvy behind the scenes, Martin. Without it, we'd probably have gone the way of Geocities. Or a growing number of the world's airlines (starting with Virgin Australia).

Needless to say, if you had previously been approached by prospective members let then let them know!

I have emailed a dozen or so potential members who contacted me as they were not able to register previously, hopefully they are still interested and will join up.

I will try to get around some of the other boards (TMP, britmodeller, aeroscale etc) to leave messages as well.

Whoa! Now that is different. Have to use the zoom function as everything is now appearing like 4-point font and my eyesight isn't up to that, even with glasses! ;)

One minor point, Martin. Is there any way of slightly reducing the size of the banner as it tends to dominate the landscape? And that's coming from someone who adores the Me262.
