Mark 1 Models 1/144 Bristol Beaufighter Mk1

In-box review here.

"Work begins in the cockpit" is the traditional refrain for larger scales and it's great to be able to say the same of 1/144 kits today. Seat, instrument panel and an exquisitely moulded control column furnish the tiny office.

The Observer also gets a nice, sturdy seat to rest upon;

Image

Needdless to say, but I'll say it anyhow...all fitted very snugly;

The Mk1 Beaufighter was armed with four cannon under the nose and six machine guns in the wing. These were arranged with four in the starboard wing and two in the port, the asymmetry necessary because of the port landing light. Mark 1 have provided this arrangement, possinle probably only because of the quality of the plastic and their moulding.

Image

No drilling was required, although if I'd been careless with the glue...
Likewise, some thought has gone into the design of the wing-fuselage joint and the result is a gap-free join, with the correct dihedral added to the wing;

Image

On the Mk.1, the tail planes were horizontal and pins and holes facilitate a good join in this area;

Image

Moving onto the engines, Mark 1 were not content to fob us off with vague cylinders embossed on a disc. Instead, they give us two sets of nicely moulded cylinders per engine, encased with a very finely moulding cowling.

Image

Similar attention was given to the undercarriage;

On the old (1950s) Airfix kit, that protrusion at the rear of the nacelle was just a blob. It was omitted entirely from both FROG and Matchbox kits. Whilst I appreciate that we're some 50 years on, it's good to see that this vent has been properly included.
...And the detail on the inner faces of the undercarriage bay doors is also there.

Image

Two types of exhaust are offered and the one I'm building uses these;

Image

Besides being very clear, the canopy was a perfect fit.

Image

Some new kits have gimmicks. I wouldn't call transparent wing tips a gimmick...more like a dashed good idea.

Image

Yes, I know that there should just be a tiny little red or green bulb in there, but what the heck. :P

Humbrol H224 and H123 applied, with H171 for the exhaust and collecting rings, H90 underneath;

I then gave it a coat of Klear and then added the decals, which behaved beau-tifully!

Definitely looking at adding a few Beaus to the display cabinet in the hopefully not-too-distant. Lovely!!! :mrgreen:
